I cook for my family for many reasons including the artistic creation it allows me on a regular basis. Still, there are most definitely days and budgeted weeks of grocery-buying and menu-planning that feel less than enjoyable. I have learned simplicity is most sustainable and traditional is most satisfying. It made me think of a dish I used to make with my mom who used to make it with her mom (pictured above) as a young girl in Cairo, Egypt.
A traditional middle eastern dish, these beef and rice stuffed grape leaves (or dolmas) are meant to be made together–gathered around a table with other family and friends. These times together can be fleeting or ever-changing through generations. Documentary family photography is the perfect way to preserve these memories. What a great session idea to get a camera in the kitchen, often the heart of the home. What family traditions do you gather for in the kitchen that should be preserved?

There is something about this photo; the way Royce is exploring this old photo Enlarger. For me, it is a time past—using film and a darkroom—and fresh eyes on Photography. I feel I’ve grown tremendously over the years, especially since having kids. I no longer want instant gratification for my work, but have realized there is so much more (education, training, creativity) for me to put into my craft in order to gain all there is to offer in this field I love so much.
Some Ways I Practice Creativity in the Kitchen
Choosing homebirth was a decision my husband and I made in the 38th week of my first pregnancy. However, it was not made lightly and not without a LOT of reading and researching. I really didn’t find a source with all the information I was loooking for in one place. But ended up confidently making the educated decision to birth my babies at home. I recently listened to The Model Health Show podcast Episode 258 on this subject. All the information Dr. Christiane Northrup laid out covered almost every single reason I chose home birth. It is an incredible listen to find out more for yourself, whether you are thinking about a baby now or even if you are already pregnant. It really is never too late.
We went to Hodges Farm in Charlotte to pick out our tree again this year. They are so kind and we always have the best time walking around the Farm with a hot cup of cocoa. Merry Christmas!
There is something about maps that I absolutely love—perhaps the allure of places I’ve never been or navigating the way to get there. Maybe I love the art of cartography and the many ways maps can be depicted. Whatever the reason, I know one of the few wishes I had for children was for them to have a curious love for travel and learning about new places like my own. So I had purchased this incredible atlas called Maps by Aleksandra Mizielinska and Daniel Mizielinski the year Braxton was born. It’s a modern, kid-friendly, engrossing education on geography and places that we now keep in our living room for constant reference. This App called Stack The States is a game I’ve had on my iPad for years, designed to teach State memorization and trivia. My three-year-old started playing it this past year without knowing what he was doing. I started playing with him and before I knew it he had memorized all 50 states and their locations. We have since moved on to Stack The Countries. It has been so fun engaging his sponge-like mind with every possible source of information on the states and countries. It’s unbelievable how much he has picked up and how many references we find in our everyday lives. Whatever his fascination with geography right now, I am capitalizing on it as much as possible. Perhaps we should all learn geography at this young age when our minds are so ripe and pliable? Braxton’s loves right now are cars (as always) and the states and countries. Well yesterday, his little mind wondered an obvious three-year-old question, “how will the countries sit and watch my cars race? And how will they wave their flags?” (Thinking about the Cars movies and how fans watch from the stands). And somehow my tired mom-brain came up with the answer. So here we are, setting up our countries for race day.
